Yes, there are many examples of success with banks merging. However, the key question is whether both banks can leverage each other’s strengths and weaknesses. For example, if one bank is better of raising money and another bank is better at making investments, there is a good synergy. However, if both banks are good at raising money but weak in investing, then a combined entity provides nothing that the two separate entities could not do on their own. So success is possible if the two entities can benefit from one another.
